    Also,in open play it’s very common. I feel the stronger players do it to end the game quicker. I’m usually the target- but since I’ve been improving some of the stronger players are getting a little surprised 😂

    Gotta know your opponents tendancies. Ive been beat down tye line covering middle many time. So pick your poison. Id rather help cover middle and give up a little bit of line hopefully your opponent isn't a good shot and hits it wide. If your range is good you can cover both line and middle

    I am new to pickleball and did a few searches to understand the scoring vs position of the players. I have looked at a few videos and it wasn't totally clear how it works after having seeing them. Your video is perfect to teach us that. Thanks!

  • @drrscolby
    @drrscolby 2 дня назад

    I have to agree with the other commenters. The video clips do not illustrate the points you are trying to teach, although they do illustrate other worthwhile things. The first clip does not show the non-hitter moving forward looking for opportunity. What is does show is Tony respecting the X, moving aggressively to attack a short return, hitting it at the moving player, and being alert for the opportunity to keep the pressure on, finally putting the 5th shot away. Tony's partner moved forward with him and then toward the right side as he moved left, and might have been in position to handle a 6th shot to the side Tony just vacated. The returner's partner seemed to be overwhelmed by the speed at which the play developed. As her partner hit the 4th shot she turned her attention to the spot that Tony just left. When the 5th shot came, it was from a place she wasn't expecting and she turned back just a bit too late. It all starts with the return of serve.

    An I throw the ball UP on a VOLLEY serve before I hit it? Assuming I still hit it below the waist and upward motion and all that. Like, can I toss it up to my head level as long as I smack it upward below my waist?

    The start was confusing. I thought that both servers had the chance to serve.

    • @charland2705
      @charland2705 3 дня назад

      They do, except for the start of every game... only one player serves in order to make it fair, and so that they don't have too much of an advantage. Imagine playing a game where the starting team player has some great, unreturnable serves, or they are better and they get ahead say, 9-0 before you win a rally, and then the serve switched to the 2nd server... that would be so frustrating! Some pickleballers will call this first score as 0-0-Start, just to avoid confusion. Either call is fine... 0-0-2 or 0-0-Start!

    What did I miss. Your pro example showed the player that hit the third beat their partner to the net and finish the point. You said the partner that didn’t take the third was supposed be first to the net. It wasn’t exactly a “pro” second shot either. He barely made it half way up before the third was hit.

    • @BetterPickleball
      @BetterPickleball 4 дня назад

      Most players move in a tethered manner and often balls that are attackable in the mid court are allowed to bounce and become less attackable. In this instance the player moved on their own third shot and attacked the next shot to score in 5.

  • @billwilhelm8646
    @billwilhelm8646 5 дней назад

    Not sure I agree. If you’re a pro and they hit the perfect drop they will play a defensive shot. If it’s not perfect and you move forward they will roll volley it between the gap

    • @BetterPickleball
      @BetterPickleball 4 дня назад

      You are correct that if you hit a perfect third shot a pro player will respond with a defensive shot but that doesn't mean it will not be attackable. Everyone makes mistakes. The point is that at the pro level there is often a player there looking for the opportunity because they don't usually moved in a tethered manner as most other players do.

    I liked your format on this video! Great bonus tip about "letting ball go". My tip on bangers: when your at the kitchen line for their 3rd shot, and you know the drive is coming, widen your base and get real low in ready position, and you can judge the drive much better, and get out of the way when necessary or block it back onto their court.

    What are your thoughts about backing up off the nvz when you see your opponent in front of you getting ready to attack/speed up a ball that is several inches above net level? I sometimes see pros backing off in these scenarios yet people at my club are telling people to never back up

    • @BetterPickleball
      @BetterPickleball 9 дней назад

      We believe in backing up if you need a little more time to defend. That said it's a learned skill. First you have to recognizing when to back up and then you need to come back to the NVZ when the threat has been neutralized or you are out of position.

  • @natehendricksen3338
    @natehendricksen3338 11 дней назад

    One common mistake at the NVZ is a speed up to the opponent opposite your partner. If the opponent gets a paddle on your speed up, your partner is likely getting a hot ball hit at them.

    I have found with better players if I am the player who is up and favoring the middle they will hit it to the gap I have created on the side which causes me to struggle to reach it.

    • @BetterPickleball
      @BetterPickleball 9 дней назад

      If the returner hits it cross court to the player in front of you when you are at the net you may need to cover the line a little more, but not every player has that shot or has it from both their forehand or backhand. The solution is a return to the center of the court between the serving team. that causes a lot of problems and bottles up the angles.

  • @tanthony3895
    @tanthony3895 12 дней назад

    Targeting always occurs in rec games ...always. People always claim they are playing for fun, but they actually want to win so they always go hard at the lower level player. That is the sheer reality of pickleball. If anyone tells you different they are lying.

    • @BetterPickleball

    I see targeting of the weaker player quite a lot. More so with lower level players. I guess winning is more important than getting hetter

    • @BetterPickleball
      @BetterPickleball 9 дней назад

      Unfortunately winning is paramount to some folks. If I'm playing a player who is weaker I still give them shots but I put more focus on the stronger player.

    For sure it happens but as mentioned in rec play you have to ask your partner if it is OK to come over and "pouch" to keep in the game. If not, you are going to take a loss and you have to live with it. Either that or look for more competitive games where the levels are are bit more even. I have agreements with several friends that if we get a significantly weaker partner the stronger player won't be frozen out of game play. Those games are closer. Even when in a losing situation we appreciate that the opposition took the higher ground and made sure that there was a reason for the stronger player to be out there.
